Getting to know you and establish a strong working relationship is the foundation of my work. My approach is strengths based and trauma informed. Sessions often include education about the adverse effects of trauma including A.C.E. (Adverse Childhood Experiences) education and more based on the work of Dr. Gabor Mate, Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk, Dr. Bruce Perry, and Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, using education and interventions to help reconnect our body and mind; to recover our natural rhythm. Traumatic and toxic stress can affect daily life with symptoms like depression, anxiety, substance misuse, relationship issues and more. I use cognitive behavioral and narrative approaches, and enjoy incorporating music, art, and humor in therapy.
Professional experience includes working with the Vermont Association of Mental Health and Addiction Recovery, providing training on motivational interviewing, group facilitation, and compassion fatigue associated with secondary trauma. I've also advocated at the Vermont Statehouse, testifying before various legislators and the Department of Corrections Committee on mental health issues, and funding for needed services.
I received my master's degree in clinical mental health counseling from Johnson State College in May 2015. I am a Wellness Recovery Action Plan (W.R.A.P.)-certified facilitator and Vermont Certified Recovery Coach.
