Hi. My name is Jan Palm, and I am a recent graduate of Northern Vermont University, where I've earned my Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
How I work ... Though I’m new to the counseling profession, I’ve lived a full life and have been on my own healing journeys for many years. I see myself as a fellow traveler along your path — someone to help you see and use your strengths, and someone to help you develop the emotional tools to heal your pain. I believe in a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) model, which means that I think if we can learn to think a bit differently and act a bit differently in some situations, we can heal ourselves and live more joyful and connected lives.
My philosophy ... Therapy doesn't have to be drudgery. I love to look for the little joys and opportunities to laugh at life, when we can. And I love to hear people's stories. I'll be here to help you recognize the things you're doing right, and to cheer you on.
Specialties I'm pursuing ... I’m keenly interested in new ways to treat PTSD and other trauma — beyond traditional talk-therapy. And I’m in the process of developing competencies in addictions counseling and alternatives to traditional AA treatment philosophies. I think AA is great for some, but not perfect for everyone.
I'd love to work with you ... Regardless of what hurdles you’re facing in your life, my goal is to create a space where you feel safe, respected, and welcomed to do the emotional work ahead of you.
I look forward to meeting you and figuring things out together, at your pace and comfort level.
